In addition to inbound and outbound processes, internal warehouse processes play a decisive role in the warehouse. Only by taking an integrative view of the flow of goods and information in the warehouse are there opportunities to save resources and increase performance. By monitoring internal warehouse processes, weak points can be uncovered and costs saved. Forklift control systems, for example, often include heat maps and reporting dashboards for monitoring and profitability analysis. This results in reorganization measures for intra-logistics and adjacent processes.
Consider typical internal warehouse processes separately and in combination
- Inventory: The inventory is a non-value-adding, but inevitable process for the annual financial statements and must be integrated into the daily processes as best as possible. The use of mobile devices eliminates the analog interface of paper and thus a source of error.
- Reorganization: Warehouse reorganization has an ever-increasing importance in the warehouse. In many cases it is based on the ABC classification of products. To work best with the given space, it is often necessary to re-sort goods and store well running items so that pickers and stacker cranes have short distances.
- Supply Management: For high-performance picking processes, the pallet replenishment to the picking zone is fine-tuned to the right place. From there, the removal and, if necessary, a restocking of the remaining quantity ensues.
- Resource management: Little coordinated processes of resources can become cost drivers and time eaters. A sophisticated forklift control system and the continuous monitoring of warehouse resources and workload make it possible to identify overload and idle times and to level the workload with appropriate measures.
- Interface to production: The provision of raw materials for production as well as the disposal of finished materials and the return of residual quantities are the interface between production and warehouse logistics. Here, the flow of information and goods must be designed in the best possible way and transparency must be ensured. Ideally, posting of the consumed goods and confirmation of the production order are visible live in the warehouse management system.
